Three Red Dragons Reach NCAA Standards at Cortland Winter Invitational

Tim Scheftic's winning long jump of 22' 9.25" is an NCAA provisional qualifier
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Three Cortland competitors provisionally qualified for the NCAA Div. III Championships at the Cortland Winter Invitational. The meet was held at the recently renovated Lusk Field House. Junior Ryan Pericozzi (Lancaster) won the pole vault by clearing 4.80 meters (15' 9”), freshman Tim Scheftic (Dryden) won the long jump at 6.94 meters (22' 9.25”) and freshman Aaron Green (Riverhead) won the triple jump at 14.24 meters (46' 8.75”).

Two other Red Dragons qualified for the ECAC Div. III Championships in the long jump. Sophomore Josh Daves (Huntington) placed second at 6.87 meters (22' 6.5”) and junior Tomas Velasquez (Catskill) was third at 6.82 meters (22' 4.5”).

Sophomore Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) won the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying distance of 14.78 meters (48' 6”). Freshman Paul Cuthbert (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) finished second in the pole vault with an ECAC-qualifying height of 4.40 meters (14' 5.25”) and sophomore Daniel Fugazot (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) was third at 4.25 meters (13' 11.25”).

Junior Garrett Parker (Whitesboro) won the 3,000-meter run in 9:25.31, with freshman teammate Brian Hotchkiss (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) in second place at 9:29.28. Freshman Kenny Sinclair (Rochester/James Monroe) and sophomore P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) finished second and third, respectively, behind Green in the triple jump. Sinclair covered 13.47 meters (44' 2.25”) and Flynn covered 13.23 meters (43' 5”).

Freshman Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) finished second in the weight throw with a distance of 14.80 meters (48' 6.75”). Sophomore Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) placed third in the shot put and weight throw, both with identical distances of 13.84 meters (45' 5”).

Also for the Red Dragons, freshman Michael Kelly (Coram/Longwood) finished third in the 800 meters (2:05.42) and freshman Tino Emmanuele (Rome/Rome Free Academy) tied for third in the 60-meter hurdles (9.07).
