CORTLAND, N.Y. – Five different players scored goals as the Cortland women's soccer team defeated Potsdam, 5-0, in windy and cold conditions Saturday afternoon at Jets Field on the SUNY Cortland campus. The Red Dragons improved to 6-4-1 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC with the win, while the Bears fell to 3-4-2 and 0-3.
Sophomore
Kelly Knight (Rochester/Greece OIympia) and freshman
Amanda Margolis (Oceanside) paced Cortland with one goal and one assist each. Senior
Jackie De Luise (Schenectady/Guilderland), junior
Taylor Teal (Delmar/Bethlehem) and freshman
Allie Maguire (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) scored one goal apiece with freshmen
Kayla Sheldrick (Levittown/Division Avenue),
Rachel Parker (Marathon) and
Jessie Nye (Marcellus) each collecting an assist.
Graduate student
Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) started in goal and did not make a save in 19 minutes, 58 seconds. Sophomore
Dani Reygers (Cortland/Homer) also did not make a save in the final 25:02 of the first half in her first Cortland action, and freshman
Taylor Hudson (Victor) played the second half in her first collegiate action without facing a shot on goal.
Freshman Katrina Rowland (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) and senior Dedra Palmer (Whitesboro) split time in goal for the Bears. Rowland registered nine saves and surrendered three goals in the first half, while Palmer made six saves and allowed two goals in the second half.
Cortland took an early lead when De Luise knocked in a shot off Rowlands' hands from six yards out in the sixth minute after accepting a cross from Knight. Knight then made it a 2-0 game in the ninth minute as she finished off a two-on-one break with Parker by sliding a shot inside the right post. Maguire capped the first-half scoring in the 20th minute, one timing a loose ball inside the right post after a scramble in front.
Margolis tallied Cortland's fourth goal in the 60th minute. Nye fed a pass to Margolis on the right side, where she carried into the box and banged in a sharp-angle shot between Palmer and the right post. Teal completed the scoring in the 75th minute when she one touched a 15-yard shot inside the left post off a pass from Sheldrick.
