Red Dragons Beat Bryn Mawr and Gettysburg to Improve to 29-1

Aubrey Barrett matched her career high with 14 kills in the win over Gettysburg
GETTYSBURG, PA. – Cortland, ranked 20th nationally in Div. III, extended its winning streak to nine matches and improved to 29-1 on the season with victories over Bryn Mawr College and Gettysburg College at Gettysburg. The Red Dragons swept Bryn Mawr, 25-12, 25-20, 25-15, and edged Gettysburg in five sets, 17-25, 25-15, 25-19, 21-25, 15-8.

Senior Sheena Asibey (Brentwood) led Cortland versus the Owls in the opening match with 11 kills and seven digs. Senior Kaitlyn Cooper (Webster/Webster Schroeder) had 10 kills and two blocks and junior Katie Wick (Cortland/Homer) finished with six kills, four aces and five digs.

Junior Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) filled the box score with 31 assists, three kills, two aces and five digs, and senior Jaclyn Lawrence (Marilla/Iroquois Central) registered eight digs.

Four Red Dragons posted double-figure kills in the win over the host Bullets. Sophomore Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) and senior Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) recorded 14 kills each, with Coyle also collecting 20 digs and four blocks. Barrett's 14 kills matches her career high. Asibey totaled 13 kills, five blocks and five digs and Cooper added 10 kills and five blocks.

In addition, Guercio rang up 50 assists, eight digs and three blocks, Wick had seven kills, 19 digs and two aces, and Lawrence finished with 23 digs.

Cortland will travel to Plattsburgh next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22, for the second round of SUNYAC East Pool Play. The Red Dragons currently lead the division with a 4-0 record, followed by New Paltz at 3-1, Oneonta at 2-2, Potsdam 1-3 and Plattsburgh at 0-4. The top three teams from the East after the second round of pool play will qualify, along with the top three teams from the West, for the SUNYAC postseason tournament November 3-5 at the East champion.
