CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman
Caitlin Guerra (Highland Falls/James I. O'Neill) scored late in overtime as the nationally 25th-ranked Cortland women's soccer team defeated Wilkes University, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Jets Field on the SUNY Cortland campus in the regular-season finale for the Red Dragons. Cortland won its ninth consecutive game and improved to 12-4-1, while the Lady Colonels had a four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 8-4-3.
Neither team created a quality scoring chance in the opening 45 minutes in windy conditions with Cortland out shooting Wilkes, 7-1, and controlling much of the action. In the second half, Cortland again carried most of the play, holding a 14-2 shot advantage. The only true scoring chance of the second half came in the 79th minute when Cortland freshman
Amanda Margolis (Oceanside) struck a shot on a loose ball in the box that caromed off the right post and was cleared out of danger by Wilkes. The best look for the Lady Colonels came in the 86th minute, but freshman Haley Adam (Brookeville, MD/Sherwood) sailed a one-time open 30-yard shot over the crossbar.
Guerra netted the game-winning goal, her first score of the season, with two minutes, 16 seconds remaining in overtime. Sophomore
Kelly Knight (Rochester/Greece Olympia) sent a cross into the box from the right side. The ball deflected off a Wilkes defender, and Guerra ran onto the loose ball and one-timed a 16-yard shot into the upper left corner.
Graduate student
Pam Monnier (East Northport) did not need to register a save for Cortland in posting her seventh solo shutout of the season. Sophomore Sam Lindo (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) stopped nine shots for the Lady Colonels.
Cortland finished with a 23-3 advantage in shots for the game and also held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
