Senior Joey Christiano scored what proved to be the game winner late in the second period
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Three different players scored goals in a three-goal second period as the Cortland men's hockey team defeated Hobart, 3-2, Saturday night at Alumni Arena in non-conference action. The Red Dragons evened their record at 1-1. The Statesmen fell to 0-1. The start of the game was delayed 25 minutes due to a fire alarm in the Park Center.
Seniors
Peter Lompado (Staten Island/Minnesota St.-Mankato) and
Joey Christiano (Rochester/Port Hope Predators) and sophomore
Stephen Nardi (Plainedge/NY Bobcats) scored Cortland's goals. Senior
Erik Nordqvist (Stockholm, Sweden/Becker College), juniors
Adam Bevilacqua (Toronto, ON/St. Norbert College) and
Michael Lysyj (Hillsborough, NJ/South Shore Kings) and freshman
Josh LaRose (Liverpool/Syracuse Stars) each contributed an assist. Senior goalie
Mike Reilly (New York/Bismarck Bobcats) made 23 saves.
Junior Brad Richard (New Bedford, MA/CD Selects) and freshman Tommaso Traversa (Torino, Italy/Bay State) tallied Hobart's goals. Junior Cam Miller (Cheswick, PA/Berkshire) collected two assists, and sophomore Keith Clarke (Westmeath, ON/Pembroke Lumber Kings) chipped in with an assist. Junior goalie Nick Broadwater (Portland, ME/Jr. Bruins) turned aside 18 shots.
After a scoreless first period, Richard gave the Statesmen a brief 1-0 lead when he scored from the point off Miller's pass from behind the net at seven minutes, 38 seconds of the second period. Cortland wasted little time in evening the game. Fifteen seconds later, Nardi tied the score with a slap shot from the point through a screen. Cortland tacked on two late power-play goals in the period for a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes. At 19:01, Lompado scored on a one-timer off a cross-ice pass from Bevilacqua, and Christiano netted a rebound goal 35 seconds later.
Cortland had a chance to increase its lead, but Broadwater denied freshman
Nick Zappia's (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) penalty shot that was awarded after a Statesmen player covered the puck in the crease. Hobart pulled to within 3-2 at the 9:51 mark of the third period when Tammaso scored from the slot. With three minutes remaining, the Statesmen had a player sent to the penalty box and couldn't pull Broadwater until just 30 seconds remained. The Red Dragons held Hobart without a quality chance in the closing seconds to clinch the win.
