Cortland Men Place Second at SUNYAC Championships

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - The Cortland men's cross country team finished in second place out of 10 schools at the 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships. The meet was hosted by SUNY New Paltz at Bowdoin Park.

Geneseo won its third straight league title with 17 points, followed by Cortland (60), Plattsburgh (90), Oneonta (126), Fredonia (143), Oswego (147), Brockport (160), Buffalo St. (237), New Paltz (242) and Potsdam (330).

Freshman Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) finished in fifth place out of 116 runners to earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:12.08. The top seven individuals are first-team all-conference.

In addition, Marcantonio's finish earned him a spot in the SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Hall of Fame, which is awarded to runners who place in the top five once, the top 10 twice or the top 15 three times.

Three Red Dragons earned second-team All-SUNYAC honors by finishing between eighth and 15th place. Junior Pat Fannon (West Islip) placed eighth in 26:26.19, junior Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) finished 14th in 26:47.43 and sophomore Cody Amengual (West Babylon) placed 15th in 26:47.43.

Rounding out Cortland's seven were freshman Mike Ramos (Middletown/Pine Bush) in 19th place (26:53.77), sophomore Brian Hotchkiss (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) in 22nd place (27:01.34), freshman Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) in 25th place (27:04.00) and junior Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) in 27th place (27:05.80).

Geneseo's Lee Berube won his third straight SUNYAC individual title in 25:24.69.

Cortland is idle next weekend and will compete at the NCAA Div. III Atlantic Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 12, in Canton, N.Y. at 12 p.m.
