Emma Whittle action

Cortland Wins OT Thriller, 3-2, vs. Buffalo St.

Freshman Emma Whittle's header pass set up the game-winning goal in OT
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Allie Maguire (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) scored with just 47 seconds remaining in overtime as the Cortland women's soccer team defeated Buffalo St., 3-2, in SUNYAC action Friday afternoon at the Jets Field on the SUNY Cortland campus.

Senior Jackie De Luise (Schenectady/Guilderland) and sophomore Kelly Knight (Rochester/Greece Olympia) also tallied goals for the Red Dragons (7-4-1 overall, 4-1 SUNYAC). Freshmen Tara Brady (Massapequa Park/Massapequa), Amanda Margolis (Oceanside) and Emma Whittle (East Moriches/Center Moriches) recorded assists. Graduate student Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) made five saves in goal.

Sophomore Amanda Smyth (North Tonawanda) scored her first two goals of the season for the Bengals (5-6-1, 0-3-1), while senior Amanda Sauer (Orchard Park) and junior Melissa Mahoney (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) each collected an assist. Junior goalie Virginia Porten (Auburn) registered 10 saves.

Knight gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. Brady served a long ball down the left side from Cortland's defensive end. Knight beat two defenders to the pass, cut to the left of the box and beat Porten with a low shot inside the right post for her third goal of the season. The Bengals tied the game just three minutes, 38 seconds into the second half. Smyth accepted a pass from Sauer and tucked a 10-yard shot inside the left post from the right side.

Cortland regained the lead less than five minutes later on De Luise's team-high fifth goal of the season. Margolis made a spin move to free herself from a defender and blasted a 22-yard shot that caromed off the cross bar and straight down toward the goal line. De Luise beat Porten and a Buffalo St. defender to the ball and scored with a header. The Bengals netted the equalizer in the 71st minute when Smyth dribbled past a defender and deposited a 30-yard shot into the upper right corner to send the game to extra time.

Cortland controlled much of the play throughout overtime, forcing Porten to turn back three consecutive shots on the left side of the box midway through the period. Then, with time winding down, Whittle sent a header pass to Maguire just inside midfield. Maguire carried to the top of the box and knocked a low, hard shot just inside the left post from 20 yards out for her second game-winning score of the season.
