CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's swimming and diving team opened the home portion of its schedule with a 161-133 dual-meet loss to SUNY Geneseo. The Red Dragons fall to 0-2 in dual action and Geneseo improves to 2-1.
Cortland earned three individual victories. Junior
Matt Blaszak (West Seneca/West Seneca East) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.14 and junior
Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) captured the 200-yard backstroke in 2:00.01. Senior
Travis Burke (Massapequa) won three-meter diving with 295.75 points and finished second on the one-meter board with 225.90 points.
Sophomore
Matt Distler (Glens Falls) finished second in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:27.30) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.47), while sophomore
Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) was the runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke (57.61) and 100-yard freestyle (49.97).
Other Cortland individual runners-up included freshman
Alex Spatzer (Kenmore/Kenmore West) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.21), junior
Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.68), senior
Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:10.53), junior
Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.15) and senior
Judd Simon (Oneida) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.15).
Cortland also placed second in both relays. Strickland, senior
Danny Salvatore (Clarence), Scheemaker and Strothenke were clocked in 3:41.77 in the 400-yard medley relay. Junior
Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks), Distler, junior
Greg Griffin (Dallas, TX/J.F. Kimball) and Strothenke finished the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:28.62, only six hundredths of a second off the winning time.
