Mike Ramos finished 29th and was one of five Cortland runners to earn all-region recognition
CANTON, N.Y. – The Cortland men's cross country team finished fourth out of 40 schools at the NCAA Div. III Atlantic Regional Championships. The host school St. Lawrence was the team champion with 89 points and Geneseo was the runner-up with 95 points. NYU placed third (103), followed by Cortland (112), Rochester (148) and RPI (193) in the top six.
St. Lawrence and Geneseo earn automatic bids to next week's NCAA Div. III Championships in Wisconsin by finishing in the top two. NYU, Cortland and Rochester are eligible for at-large berths by placing in the top five – those berths will be announced Sunday on NCAA.com.
Cortland's top five runners all finished in the top 35 to earn all-region honors. Freshman
Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) crossed the line 10th in 25:32.1 over 8,000 meters. A total of 272 runners competed. Geneseo's Lee Berube won the race in 24:41.3.
Junior
Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished 17th in 25:51.8 and junior
Pat Fannon (West Islip) was 23rd in 26:10.4. Freshman
Mike Ramos (Middletown/Pine Bush) finished 29th (26:13.8) and junior
Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) was 33rd in 26:18.2.
Marcantonio is guaranteed a spot at next week's national meet if Cortland is not chosen as an at-large team. The top seven individuals not on a qualifying team earn national berths. Hopkins will earn a national spot if NYU receives an at-large team berth but Cortland does not.
Rounding out Cortland's seven competitors were sophomore
Cody Amengual (West Babylon), who finished 56th (26:45.1), and freshman Matt Savino (Seaford), who placed 69th (26:53.0).
