Victory in Final Relay Propels Cortland Past Defending SUNYAC Champ Geneseo, 149-145

Sarah Culmo won the 50-yard freestyle and swam on both winning relays
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland won the 200-yard freestyle relay, the meet's final event, by 0.22 seconds and the Red Dragons edged four-time defending SUNYAC champion Geneseo, 149-145, at Holsten Pool. Cortland evens its dual-meet record at 1-1 and Geneseo is now 2-1.

Geneseo entered the final relay with a 141-136 lead. Cortland's winning quartet of sophomore Sarah Culmo (West Islip), junior Jessica Evans (Hamburg), senior Michelle Seeger (Oneonta) and freshman Michaela Auer (Oswego) finished in 1:40.46 to earn 11 first-place points. Geneseo scored four points with its time of 1:40.68.

Also important to Cortland's victory was the third-place finish in the event (1:44.34) by freshman Lauren Kaplowitz (Stamford, CT/West Hills), junior Molly Miller (Eden), sophomore M.K. Dugue (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and freshman Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis). Cortland scored two points for that finish – if Geneseo placed third instead, the meet would have ended in a tie.

Sophomore Chrisanna Hickey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill) won two individual events – the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.28) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.45). Evans won the 100-yard freestyle (55.75) and placed second in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.07) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.05), while junior Abigail MacDonald (East Amherst/Williamsville North) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.04) and was second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.29) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.30).

Culmo took top honors in the 50-yard freestyle (25.47) and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.87). Caputo won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:58.40), Auer was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.55) and Seeger placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.88).

In addition to its victory in the final relay, Cortland also won the meet-opening 400-yard medley relay as MacDonald, Auer, Hickey and Culmo finished in 4:09.31.
