Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) totaled 15 points and five assists as Cortland remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 64-51 victory at Geneseo.
The Red Dragons are now 3-0 in the league and 6-1 overall, their best start since the 2005-06 squad opened the season with a 14-1 record.
Manning made 5-of-10 shots, including 3-of-7 three-pointers. Winter also hit 5-of-10 field goals and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line. Junior
Dan Sternkopf (Washingtonville) scored a career-high 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting and matched his career high with nine rebounds.
Mike Hoy led Geneseo (1-6, 0-1 SUNYAC) with 13 points and three assists and Ryan Riefenhauser finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
Cortland led 29-21 at halftime, but the Knights came back to tie the game at 45-45 with 10:07 left on a dunk and free throw by Jordan Jones. The Red Dragons responded by scoring the next eight points on a
John Connolly (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) layup, a Winter jumper, a Manning free throw and a Winter three-point play.
Geneseo got back to within six at 53-47 on an Abe Miller layup with 3:56 left and missed a jumper that would have cut the deficit to four. Winter recorded another three-point play, this time with 3:03 left, to push the Cortland lead to nine and he drained two foul shots with 2:28 remaining to give the Red Dragons an 11-point lead. Cortland trailed only once at 2-0 in the game's first minute.
Cortland shot 49 percent from the floor (25-of-51) compared to Geneseo's 34 percent (19-of-56). Both teams struggled from three-point range – the Red Dragons made just 4-of-18 attempts and the Knights 3-of-18.
Cortland will play at Buffalo State on Friday at 8 p.m. and at Fredonia on Saturday at 4 p.m.
