Cortland Drains School Record-Tying 15 Three-Pointers in 83-69 Upset at Plattsburgh

John Connolly hit 4-of-6 three-pointers and tied his career high with 17 points
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Cortland made a school record-tying 15 three-pointers and shot 68 percent from behind the arc as the Red Dragons upset defending SUNYAC champion Plattsburgh on the road, 83-69. Three players accounted for all of Cortland's three-pointers. Sophomore Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale-Kingsbridge) hit 7-of-9 treys and finished with a game-high 24 points. Sophomore Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) and freshman John Connolly (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) each shot 4-of-6 from long distance. Winter totaled 22 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Connolly matched his career high with 17 points and registered four steals and two blocked shots.

Freshman Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) added 15 points, three blocks and three assists for the Red Dragons (8-14, 5-10 SUNYAC). Cortland maintains its spot in eighth place in the league with three games remaining. The top eight teams qualify for the conference postseason tournament.

Plattsburgh (14-8, 10-5 SUNYAC), which entered the game in second place in the conference, was led by Chris Ruiz's 20 points. Errol Daniyan scored 15 points and grabbed 20 rebounds as the Cardinals outrebounded the Red Dragons, 49-25. Carl Munnerlyn finished with 11 points and Steve Thomas scored 10 points and handed out four assists.

Cortland shot 78 percent (18-of-23) from the floor in the second half and finished the game at 56 percent. The Red Dragons made 15-of-22 three-pointers, 10-of-12 after halftime.

Plattsburgh led 21-9 midway through the first half and was up 30-19 with 1:55 left before intermission. Cortland, however, finished the period on a 9-0 run courtesy of two Winter three-pointers and a Connolly trey and trailed 30-28 at the break. The streak continued as the Red Dragons scored the first 12 points of the second half, including two Smith threes, to take a 40-30 lead.

Cortland's lead grew as high as 23 points at 61-38 on a Winter three-pointer with 11:10 remaining. Connolly's three-pointer with 8:01 remaining put Cortland up 70-43 and was the Red Dragons' 15th trey of the game, tying the school mark set versus SUNYIT in the 2007-08 season.

Plattsburgh scored 13 of the next 15 points and got back within 72-60 with 3:58 remaining. The Cardinals were as close as 10 at 76-66 on a Daniyan put-back with 1:21 left, but McMahon sank two free throws ith 1:14 remaining and the lead never dropped below double figures.

Cortland completes its regular season with three home games starting Tuesday, Feb. 15, versus Oneonta at 8 p.m.
