Justin Nelson swam the 200-yard backstroke in a school-record 1:55.93 and finished seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore
Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) broke his own school record in the 200-yard backstroke during the final day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Cortland finished second in the team standings for the sixth consecutive season. Geneseo won its 13th straight SUNYAC title with 854 points, followed by Cortland (674), New Paltz (405), Fredonia (384) and Buffalo St. (297) in the top five. Rounding out the nine-team field were Oswego (287), Oneonta (248), Potsdam (203) and Brockport (191).
Nelson finished second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.93. He set the previous record of 1:55.95 last season. Sophomore
Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (47.38) and junior
Danny Salvatore (Clarence) placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.94).

Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool), Maximowicz, junior
Judd Simon (Oneida) and freshman
Matt Distler (Glens Falls) finished second in 3:07.96, only one hundredth of a second behind Geneseo's winning unit.
Simon finished third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.24), Distler was third in the 100-yard freestyle (47.48) and junior
Travis Burke (Massapequa) finished third in three-meter diving (459.20 points). Junior
Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.67), freshman
Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) ended sixth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:59.14) and sophomore
Kyle Kaznowski (Kingston) finished sixth in three-meter diving (430.65 points).
Also for the Red Dragons, Nelson finished seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:59.40) and junior
Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor) was seventh in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.97, 1:58.64 in prelims). Strickland tied for first in the “B” final of the 100-yard freestyle in 48.58 seconds.
