Four Red Dragons Post NCAA Provisional Qualifying Efforts at Cornell Kane Invitational

Tomas Velasquez missed a school record in the long jump by three centimeters
ITHACA, N.Y. – Four Red Dragons provisionally qualified for the NCAA Div. III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships to highlight Cortland's performances at the Cornell University Kane Invitational.

Junior Tomas Velasquez (Catskill) finished first out of 47 competitors in the long jump with a distance of 7.16 meters (23' 6”). He missed NCAA automatic qualifying by only four centimeters and was only three centimeters away from a school record.

Freshman Aaron Green (Riverhead) missed NCAA automatic qualifying status in the triple jump by only three centimeters with his second-place effort of 14.65 meters (48' 0.75”). Senior Will Razzano (Manorville/Riverhead) also provisionally qualified for nationals in the event with his fifth-place distance of 14.21 meters (46' 7.5”).

Junior Ryan Pericozzi (Lancaster) won the pole vault in a field of 30 entrants with an NCAA provisional height of 4.90 meters (16' 0.75”). Also in that event, sophomore Daniel Fugazot (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) qualified for the ECAC Div. III Championships with his 10th-place height of 4.50 meters (14' 9”).

Two Red Dragons met ECAC standards in the long jump. Sophomore Josh Daves (Huntington) finished fourth at 6.86 meters (22' 6.25”) and freshman Tim Scheftic (Dryden) was seventh at 6.83 meters (22' 5”). Freshman Kenny Sinclair (Rochester/James Monroe) finished 10th in the triple jump with an ECAC distance of 13.62 meters (44' 8.25”) and sophomore Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) reached an ECAC standard of 14.67 meters (48' 1.75”) for an eighth-place finish in the shot put.

In addition, two Cortland athletes earned top-10 finishes. Sophomore Zac Karpinski (Syracuse/West Genesee) was fifth out of 55 sprinters in the 200-meter dash (23.27) and freshman Brandon Loomis (Rocky Point) finished eighth in the high jump (1.89 meters, 6' 2.25”). Loomis was actually in a six-way tie for the fifth-best height, but finished eighth due to number of misses.
