Red Dragons Finish Third at SUNYAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships

GENEVA, N.Y. – Freshman Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) registered two second-place and one third-place finish to highlight Cortland's performances at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Cortland finished third at the eight-team meet with 93 points, two points ahead of fourth-place Oneonta. Buffalo State won the team conference title with 124 points, followed by Geneseo (106), Cortland, Oneonta (91), Brockport (86), Plattsburgh (73), Fredonia (42) and Oswego (7). The meet was held at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Bonnell finished second in the 55-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.26 seconds. She placed second in the long jump with an ECAC-qualifying 5.23 meters (17' 2”) and was third in the 200-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying time of 26.42 seconds.

Sophomore Jordyn Naylon (Fairport) was the runner-up in the mile run with an ECAC time of 5:06.11 and junior Alyson Dalton (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) was second in the 3,000 meters with an ECAC time of 10:21.54. Graduate student Kristen Serikstad (Oyster Bay) placed second in the high jump. Her height of 1.61 meters (5' 3.25”), an ECAC qualifier, tied for the best height, but she officially finished second due to number of misses.

Freshman Alex Budd (Riverhead) finished third in the high jump (1.56 meters – 5' 1.25”), and the 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Trisha Clark (Pulaski), sophomore Caitlin Triantafillou (Getzville/Williamsville North), junior Val Basciano (New City/Albertus Magnus) and sophomore Lex Grable (Pine Bush) placed third with an ECAC time of 4:07.00.

Senior Kristin Vespa (Ossining) qualified for ECACs with her fourth-place time of 18:27.71 in the 5,000 meters and freshman Emily Cotey (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) hit an ECAC standard with her fourth-place time of 10:38.87 in the 3,000 meters. Sophomore Chelsea Lachman (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) finished fourth in the shot put with a distance of 11.45 meters (37' 6.75”).

Freshman Kelly Hugo (Highland) finished fifth in two events. She posted an ECAC-qualifying long jump of 5.18 meters (17' 0”) and cleared 2.95 meters (9' 8”) in the pole vault. Sophomore Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) finished sixth in the triple jump with an ECAC distance of 10.81 meters (35' 5.75”).

Three Red Dragons registered seventh-place finishes. Sophomore Katie Darling (Delhi/Delaware Academy) had an ECAC time of 8.76 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles. Junior Jenna Evarts (West Islip) was clocked in 27.02 seconds in the 200-meter dash and senior Sarah Wignall (Weedsport) cleared 2.80 meters (9' 2.25”) in the pole vault.

Also scoring for Cortland with eighth-place finishes were sophomore Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) in the 55-meter hurdles (ECAC-qualifying 8.87 in prelims, 8.97 in the finals), junior Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland) in the 400-meter dash (1:02.04) and sophomore Alana Hotchkiss (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) in the triple jump (10.53 meters -34' 6.75”).
