ELMIRA, N.Y. – The nationally 13th-ranked Elmira men's hockey team scored two power-play goals in the third period to break a 4-4 tie and went on to defeat Cortland, 6-4, in non-conference action Saturday night. The Red Dragons dropped to 5-15-2 with the setback. The Soaring Eagles stretched their unbeaten streak to 10 games (9-0-1) and improved to 13-5-3 with the win.
Junior
Ryan Markell (Columbus, OH/Ohio St.) led Cortland with two goals. Sophomore Chris Kaleta (Hamburg/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and freshman Brian Roller (Utica/CD Selects) each netted a goal. Junior
Erik Nordqvist (Stockholm, Sweden/Becker College) contributed two assists, while junior
Jake Saville (Bellingham, WA/Marquette Rangers) and sophomores
Ronnie Beardsley (Burnt Hills/NY Apple Core) and
Mack Swartz (Aurora, CO/Salve Regina) recorded one assist apiece. Junior goalie
Brittan Kuhlman (Omaha, NE/ Winnipeg Saints) made 43 saves, reaching at least 40 saves for the third time in the last four games.
Rick Schrank paced Elmira with two goals. Martin Lee had a goal and two assists, Colin Hoey recorded a goal and an assist and Brock Sawyer and Jesper Strale each tallied a goal. John Clewlow chipped in with two assists, and four others had one assist. Darren MacDonald stopped 19 shots.
Elmira took a 2-0 lead on Hoey's short-handed goal at three minutes, 20 seconds and Sawyer's power-play goal at 7:14 of the first period. Cortland answered with goals just 21 seconds apart to close the period with the game knotted at 2-all. Roller tallied an unassisted goal, his first career score, at 11:12, and Saville set up Kaleta's goal at 11:33.
Strale made it a 3-2 game with an even-strength tally at 2:13 of the second, but the Red Dragons evened the game for a second time when Markell scored at 5:52. At 1:31 of the third period, Lee gave the Soaring Eagles the lead back. Just over four minutes later, however, Cortland again leveled the score on Markell's second goal of the night.
Schrank scored the game winner on the power play at 11:42, and added an insurance goal, also with the man advantage, with 17 seconds left in regulation to seal the win.
