Meaghan Kohler finished 4-for-10 with a grand slam and two doubles over the two victories
CLERMONT, FLA. - Freshman
Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) hit a grand slam in the first game and doubled twice to set up two runs in the second game as Cortland, ranked 24th nationally, defeated RPI, 7-1, and Bowdoin, 3-1, at the NTC Spring Games. The Red Dragons are 6-2 with two Florida games remaining Friday versus Loras (Iowa) and St. Scholastica (Minn.).
Cortland 7, RPI 1
Cortland scored twice in the first and five times in the fourth, highlighted by Kohler's grand slam, to support starting pitcher
Lyndsay Rowell (Sandy Creek). She improved to 4-1 on the season after allowing four hits and one run in seven innings. She struck out nine batters and walked one.
Senior
Brooke Weidman (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) finished 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Kohler, senior
Donnalyn Cross (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) and sophomore
Lucia Meola (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) each went 2-for-5 and junior
Lorraine Stoddard (Liverpool) reached base three times on a walk and two hit-by-pitches.
Sara Heller provided most of the offense for RPI (5-4). She went 3-for-3, including a solo homer in the fourth, a double and a single.
Cortland's second inning started with Stoddard being hit by a pitch. She moved to second on a
Cassie Kardias (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) sacrifice bunt and went to third on a wild pitch. She eventually scored on a Weidman RBI single. Weidman scored on a Cross single to right.
Most of the Red Dragons' damage in the fifth came with two outs. With two outs and Cross on third,
Abby Martin (Oswego) and
Jessica Harman (Penfield) each walked and Kohler followed with her first collegiate home run. Stoddard then walked and scored on a Kardias RBI double.
Cortland 3, Bowdoin 1
Bowdoin, an NCAA tournament qualifier last season, took a 1-0 lead on a Kara Nilan RBI single in the top of the first inning. The Red Dragons tied the game in the fourth when Kohler doubled with two outs and pinch runner
Charlotte Freed (Great Neck/Great Neck South) scored on Stoddard's RBI single.
In the sixth, Kohler doubled with one out.
Tara Donnino (East Northport/Northport) entered as a pinch runner and Stoddard delivered again with a run-scoring single. She took second on the throw home, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Kardias RBI single.
Kohler, Stoddard and Weidman each finished 2-for-3. Martin pitched a complete game for her second victory of the spring. She gave up six hits, struck out six and walked four. Toni DaCampo went 3-for-3 and Nilan was 2-for-4 for the Polar Bears (1-2). Nilan also finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
