Cortland Opens Season at Army Meet

Tom Calandra finished fourth in the pole vault
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore Zac Karpinski (Syracuse/West Genesee) won the 200-meter dash and senior Nick Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) qualified for the ECAC Div. III Championships in the 110-meter hurdles as Cortland competed at Army's Dick Shea Open to begin the men's outdoor track and field season.

Karpinski was the top finisher among 49 entries with his 200-meter dash time of 23.01 seconds. He also finished third out of 32 in the 100-meter dash at 11.34 seconds. Wilson finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.76 seconds, the exact ECAC qualifying standard.

Karpinski also anchored the 4x100-meter relay team that finished third in 44.38 seconds. Also on that unit were sophomore Steve Damiani (West Islip), freshman Andre Venner (Spring Valley/Hawthorne Christian) and junior Dan McManus (Warwick/Warwick Valley).

Freshman Tom Calandra (Williamsville/Williamsville North) and freshman Paul Cuthbert (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the pole vault in a field of 16 competitors. Calandra cleared 4.20 meters (13' 9.5”), which was actually tied for the second-best height but officially was fourth due to number of misses. Cuthbert recorded a height of 4.08 meters (13' 4.75”).

Senior Phill Wiltshire (Vestal) finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (58.58). Venner earned a 12th-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.67) and a 19th-place finish in the 200-meter dash (24.15). Sophomore Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) finished 11th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:15.09) and Damiani was 18th in the 200-meter dash (24.15). In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Kyle Martin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) finished 12th (15:59.43) and freshman Brian Hotchkiss (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) was 13th (16:14.37) out of 24 runners.
