Red Dragons Compete at Hamilton Invitational

Tyler Prendergast placed in the top 10 in three different field events
CLINTON, N.Y. – An ECAC-qualifying effort by the 4x100-meter relay team highlighted Cortland's performances at the non-team scoring Hamilton College Continental Invitational men's outdoor track and field meet. The foursome of sophomore Steve Damiani (West Islip), freshman Andre Venner (Spring Valley/Hawthorne Christian), junior Dan McManus (Warwick/Warwick Valley) and sophomore Zac Karpinski (Syracuse/West Genesee) won the relay with a time of 42.82 seconds.

Those four also individually finished in the top half of the field in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Karpinski placed second out of 34 entries in the 100 meters in 11.07 seconds, 0.02 off ECAC standards, and was third out of 30 sprinters in the 200 meters in 22.69 seconds. McManus placed seventh in the 100 meters (11.42) and ninth in the 200 meters (23.22), Damiani was ninth in the 100 meters (11.51) and 11th in the 200 meters (23.47), while Venner finished 13th in the 100 meters (11.58) and 15th in the 200 meters (23.85).

Freshman Shawn McDonald (Pleasantville/Byram Hills), freshman Michael Belluzzi (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) and sophomore Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) claimed three of the top six spots in the javelin throw. McDonald finished second out of 24 entries at 52.64 meters (172' 8”), Belluzzi was third at 51.53 meters (169' 1”) and Wilson placed sixth at 42.67 meters (140' 0”). Wilson also finished 11th out of 24 in the hammer throw at 34.78 meters (114' 1”).

Five Red Dragons finished in the top 12 among 29 runners in the 5,000 meters. Sophomore Pat Fannon (West Islip) was third in 15:56.96 and junior Brendan Ward (St. James/Smithtown East) finished fifth in 16:05.95. Junior Sean Twomey (Cornwall) was seventh (16:23.10), senior Nick Jeror (Rome/Rome Free Academy) was eighth (16:27.64) and junior Greg Burns (Watertown/South Jefferson) placed 12th (16:45.35).

In the 1,500-meter run, freshman Kyle Martin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) turned in the third-best time out of 27 runners at 4:13.42. Freshman Brian Hotchkiss (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) was fifth (4:18.00), sophomore Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) finished 10th (4:26.16) and freshman Tim Lee (West Babylon) was 13th (4:32.22).

Freshman Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) finished third out of 22 in the discus (39.09 meters – 128' 3”), seventh in the hammer throw (39.00 meters – 127' 11”) and 10th of 24 in the shot put (12.03 meters – 39' 5.75”). Freshman Besnick Palushi (Pine Plains) finished fifth in the pole vault with a height of 3.95 meters (12' 11.5”).

Freshman Michael Kelly (Coram/Longwood) finished sixth among 31 runners in the 800 meters (2:03.45). Junior Matt Wachtel (Averill Park) was seventh in the discus (32.77 meters – 107' 6”) and 11th in the shot put (12.03 meters – 39' 5.75”).

Sophomore Erik LeRoy (Kings Park) and sophomore Bryan Rossi (Smithtown/Kings Park) finished seventh (5.99 meters – 19' 8”) and 11th (5.80 meters – 19' 0.5”), respectively, in the long jump. In addition, freshman Jared Thomson (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) placed eighth in the shot put (12.52 meters – 41' 1”) and sophomore Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) was eighth in the hammer throw (38.48 meters – 126' 3”).
