Red Dragons Strong Across the Board at Cortland Classic

Justin Torres won the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying distance of 46' 9"
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland athletes logged a host of top-eight finishes at the two-day Cortland Classic men's outdoor track and field meet, which was held at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.

Sophomore Zac Karpinski (Syracuse/West Genesee) won two sprints, both with ECAC Div. III Championship qualifying times. He finished first out of 36 entrants in the 100-meter dash (10.89) and first in a 37-athlete field in the 200-meter dash (22.16). Senior Gino Bisceglia (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) won the 400-meter dash (49.12) and was second in the 200-meter dash (22.19), both with ECAC-qualifying times.

Sophomore Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) finished first in the shot put in 14.25 meters (46' 9”), which is exactly the ECAC qualifying standard. Torres also finished fifth in the discus (37.17 meters – 121' 11”) and sixth in the hammer throw (44.50 meters – 146' 0”).

Cortland won a pair of relays with ECAC times. Freshman Tim Scheftic (Dryden), freshman Andre Venner (Spring Valley/Hawthorne Christian), junior Dan McManus (Warwick/Warwick Valley) won the 4x100-meter relay in 43.97 seconds. The quartet of sophomore Eric Banks (Westbury), junior Zac Farnham-Haskell (Essex Junction, VT/Essex), senior Phill Wiltshire (Vestal) and Bisceglia won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:17.84.

Sophomore Josh Daves (Huntington) also won an event for the Red Dragons. He beat 17 other competitors with a long jump of 6.61 meters (21' 8.25”).

Banks and senior Will Razzano (Manorville/Riverhead) each recorded two top-three finishes. Banks was second in the 400-meter dash (50.24) and third in the 200-meter dash (22.37). Razzano finished second in the triple jump (13.48 meters – 44' 2.75”) and third in the long jump (6.53 meters – 21' 5.25”). Sophomore Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) was third in both the javelin (46.55 meters – 152' 9”) and the discus (38.61 meters – 126' 8”).

Cortland placed five in the top eight of the pole vault standings. Junior Ken Bucaro (Tully) and senior Schuyler Field (Queensbury) each cleared 4.25 meters (13' 11.25”). Bucaro finished second and Field was third. Senior Jacob Schwartz (White Sulfur Springs/Liberty) and freshman Tom Calandra (Williamsville/Williamsville North) both cleared 4.10 meters (13' 5.25”) – Schwartz officially finished fourth and Calandra was fifth. Senior Tony Nguyen (Gates/Gates-Chili) tied for eighth place at 3.95 meters (12' 11.5”).

Freshman Michael Belluzzi (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) finished second in the javelin (52.00 meters – 170' 7”). Freshman Cody Amengual (West Babylon) placed third out of 45 runners in the 800 meters (1:58.53) and sophomore Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:59.41). Sophomore P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) was third in the triple jump at 13.28 meters (43' 7”).

McManus was sixth in both the 100-meter dash (11.30) and 200-meter dash (22.80). Sophomore Daniel Fugazot (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) was fifth in the 200 meters (22.70) and Venner placed eighth in the 100-meter dash (11.44).

Sophomore Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished fourth out of 22 in the 10,000-meter run (33:00.89), with freshman teammate Tim Lee (West Babylon) sixth (33:02.88). Sophomore Robert Brower (Massapequa) and sophomore Bryan Rossi (Smithtown/Kings Park) finished second (5,915 pts.) and fourth (3,982 pts.), respectively, in the decathlon. Freshman Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) finished sixth in the discus (36.99 meters – 121' 4”) and eighth in the hammer throw (43.42 meters – 142' 5”).

Also in the top eight for Cortland were sophomore Erik LeRoy (Kings Park) in the long jump (6th place; 6.39 meters – 20' 11.75”), freshman Matt McNamara (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (7th place; 10:50.54), freshman Brian Hotchkiss (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) in the 5,000 meters (7th place; 16:09.35), sophomore Mitch Galvin (Oswego) in the 400-meter dash (8th place; 53.56) and sophomore Pat Fannon (West Islip) in the 1,500 meters (8th place; 4:05.06).
