Lyndsay Rowell (Sandy Creek) threw a two-hit shutout in the opener and sophomore
Morgan Kuhn (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) earned her first career win with five innings of four-hit ball in the nightcap as nationally 20th-ranked Cortland swept Buffalo St., 5-0 and 8-1, in a SUNYAC doubleheader.
Junior
Lorraine Stoddard (Liverpool) finished a combined 4-for-5 with a walk and senior
Donnalyn Cross (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) was 5-for-8 with two triples and a double in the doubleheader for Cortland (15-3, 4-0 SUNYAC). Buffalo State is now 2-10 and 0-2.
Game 1: Cortland 5, Buffalo St. 0
Rowell improved to 8-2 with the victory in the opener. She struck out four and walked one. Rowell allowed a leadoff single by Jordan Dudish to start the game but did not give up another hit until Sam Strapason's two-out single in the sixth.
Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the second when Stoddard reached on a two-out infield single and scored from first on a
Katie Fusco (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) single to right center. Buffalo State's best scoring chance came in the third when Sara Morse reached on an error, took second on a groundout and went to third on a passed ball. Rowell recorded a strikeout and flyout to escape the threat.
The Red Dragons broke the game open with four in the sixth. The key hits in the inning were an
Abby Martin (Oswego) leadoff double, a Stoddard RBI single three batters later, a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by
Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) and a
Tara Donnino (East Northport/Northport) two-run single.
Stoddard finished 3-for-3 and Cross was 2-for-4 with a triple to account for five of Cortland's eight hits.
Game 2: Cortland 8, Buffalo St. 1
Kuhn threw the first five innings for her first collegiate victory. She gave up four hits and one run, struck out three and didn't walk anyone. Cross was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three runs scored and
Lucia Meola (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) went 2-for-2 with a double, walk, two RBI and two runs scored. Kohler went 2-for-2 and
Cassie Kardias (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) was 2-for-4.
Cross and Meola led off the first with back-to-back doubles to give Cortland a 1-0 lead. Pinch hitter
Alicia Hibbard's (Canastota) hit a sacrifice fly in the third to extend the lead to 2-0.
Buffalo State got a run back in the fourth when Kyrstin Lekki led off with a triple and scored on Strapason's sacrifice fly. Cortland bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The inning started with four straight hits, capped by a Cross RBI single. Meola followed with a sacrifice fly and the final run scored on a fielder's choice.
In the sixth, Cross hit a one-out triple and Meola walked. Kardias drove in a run with a groundout and Martin blasted a two-run homer to left center. Martin also pitched the final two innings and allowed one hit , one walk and no runs. She struck out three.
Cortland will host Fredonia in a SUNYAC doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
