Cortland Sprinters Shine at Moravian Coach P Invitational

BETHLEHEM, PA. – ECAC-qualifying performances in both the 100-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay topped the charts for Cortland at the Moravian Coach P Invitational women's outdoor track and field meet.

Freshman Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) beat out 25 competitors to win the 100-meter dash in an ECAC-qualifying 12.60 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay consisting of freshman Trisha Clark (Pulaski), junior Abby Vander Veen (Delanson/Faith Bible Academy), freshman Cait Reilly (Warwick/Monroe-Woodbury), and sophomore Lex Grable (Pine Bush) finished first out of 18 teams with an ECAC time of 4:01.63.

The 100-meter hurdles featured three ECAC qualifiers with sophomore Nikki Shafer (Troy/ Columbia) leading the group, finishing third out of 23 competitors in 15.56 seconds. Sophomore Katie Darling (Delhi/Delaware Academy) finished fifth with a time of 15.64 seconds, and junior Brenna Filipello (Selkirk/Bethlehem) finished ninth with a time of 16.26 seconds.

The 4x100-meter relay consisting of freshman Tara Kickel (West Islip), junior Jenna Evarts (West Islip), junior Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland), and Bonnell finished third in a field of 10 teams with an ECAC-qualifying time of 49.87 seconds.

Three Red Dragons claimed top-10 spots in both the 400-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Vander Veen lead Cortland in both events with a second-place finish and an ECAC-qualifying time of 59.84 seconds in the 400 meters as well as a second place in the 200 meters (26.50 seconds). Reilly took third in the 400 meters (1:00.08), and 10th in the 200 meters (27.22). Montrose placed fifth in the 400 meters (1:00.84), and ninth in the 200 meters (27.13 seconds). Junior Val Basciano (New City/Albertus Magnus) finished sixth in the 400 meters (1:00.84) along with a seventh place finish in the same event for Evarts (1:00.92).

The discus included three top-10 performances with sophomore Jess Andrianos (Syracuse/West Genesee) finishing fourth with a throw of 34.66 meters (113' 08”). Sophomore Chelsea Lachman (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) finished seventh (33.67 meters – 110' 5”), and sophomore Karli Johnson (Mount Sinai) finished eighth (33.08 meters – 108' 6”).

Freshman Kelly Hugo (Highland) finished in top-five spots in two events. Hugo finished fourth in the pole vault with a jump of 3.05 meters (10' 0”) and finished fifth out of 29 jumpers in the long jump with a mark of 5.10 meters (16' 8.75”).

Sophomore Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) finished in fifth place out of 18 competitors in the triple jump with a mark of 10.47 meters (34' 4.25”).
