GENESEO, N.Y. – Cortland claimed six event titles and finished second in the team standings at the 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by SUNY Geneseo.
The host Knights captured their third straight league crown with 187 points, followed by Cortland with 149 and Fredonia at 132. Rounding out the meet were Buffalo St. (109), Plattsburgh (92), Brockport (67), Oneonta (33) and Oswego (33).
Senior
Gino Bisceglia (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) broke meet and school records with his NCAA provisional qualifying winning time of 47.75 seconds in the 400-meter dash. Senior
Phill Wiltshire (Vestal) finished first in the 400-meter hurdles in 54.28 seconds (NCAA provisional 54.17 in prelims).
The 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore
Eric Banks (Westbury), junior
Zac Farnham-Haskell (Essex Junction, VT/Essex), Wiltshire and Bisceglia repeated as conference champion. They set a new meet record with a time of 3:16.75.
Junior
Ryan Pericozzi (Lancaster) won the pole vault with an NCAA provisional height of 4.90 meters (16' 0.75”). Both Pericozzi and Fredonia's Broncho Rollins set a meet record with that height, but Pericozzi took home the title based on number of misses. Junior
Tomas Velasquez (Catskill) won the long jump with an NCAA provisional distance of 7.16 meters (23' 6”) and sophomore
Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) won the shot put at 15.26 meters (50' 0.75”).
Torres also placed second in the discus at 41.22 meters (135' 3”) and sixth in the hammer throw at 39.42 meters (129' 4”). Farnham-Haskell finished second behind Bisceglia in the 400-meter dash in 48.67 seconds, freshman
Tim Scheftic (Dryden) was second in the long jump behind Velasquez at 7.11 meters (23' 4”), an NCAA provisional qualifer, and freshman
Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) finished second in the hammer throw at 45.69 meters (149' 11”).
Each individual event champion earns first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while each individual event runner-up is second-team All-SUNYAC.
Cortland earned three third-place finishes. Sophomore
P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) was third in the triple jump (13.88 meters – 45' 6.5”), freshman
Michael Belluzzi (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) placed third in the javelin (49.91 meters – 163' 9”) and sophomore Robert Brower (Massapequa) finished third in the decathlon (4,886 points).
In addition to Pericozzi's victory, Cortland claimed four additional top-eight scoring finishes in the pole vault. Senior
Schuyler Field (Queensbury), last year's champion, finished fourth at 4.60 meters. Junior
Ken Bucaro (Tully), sophomore Daniel Fugazot (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) and freshman
Paul Cuthbert (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) all cleared 4.45 meters (14' 7.25”). Due to number of misses, Bucaro finished fifth, Fugazot was sixth and Cuthbert was seventh.
Sophomore
Josh Daves (Huntington) finished fourth in the long jump (7.00 meters – 22' 11.75”) and freshman Kenny Sinclair (Rochester/James Monroe) was fourth in the triple jump (13.85 meters – 45' 5.25”).
Sophomore
Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) placed fifth in the discus (37.78 meters – 123' 11”) and sixth in the javelin (45.26 meters – 148' 6”), while his brother, senior
Nick Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy), finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.79, 15.66 prelims).
Freshman
Jared Thomson (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) turned in a sixth-place effort in the shot put (13.97 meters – 45' 10”). Senior
Will Razzano (Manorville/Riverhead) was seventh in two events, the long jump (6.58 meters – 21' 7.25”) and the triple jump (13.73 meters – 45' 0.5”), and sophomore
Bryan Rossi (Smithtown/Kings Park) finished seventh in the decathlon (4,315 points). Freshman
Cody Amengual (West Babylon) had the fastest time in the preliminaries of the 800 meters at 1:53.25, but finished seventh in the finals in 1:57.61.
