Katie Barbagallo broke a scoreless tie 5:04 into the second half and tallied again later in the period

Katie Barbagallo (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) scored twice and sophomore
Holly Flanigan (Amherst/Williamsville North) added a goal as Cortland, ranked 11th nationally in Division III, won 3-1 at Ithaca College in the season opener for both teams.

Emily von Schondorf (Webster/Webster Thomas) made four saves for the victory. She was making her first collegiate start after serving as Cortland's backup goalie the past two seasons. Ithaca goalie Kelly Singleton finished with 11 saves.
All of the game's scoring came in the second half. Barbagallo scored 5:04 into the period on a shot from the left side toward the right post that deflected off an Ithaca defender. Flanigan increased the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal four and a half minutes later when she knocked in a rebound after Singleton turned away a long shot.
Barbagallo struck again with 12:32 remaining when she took a pass from the top of the circle by sophomore
Erin Smith (Greene) and scored from close range. The Bombers broke up the shutout bid on a goal by Heather Kozimor with 6:17 left. Kozimor deflected a long pass from Sam English past von Schondorf from about eight yards away.
In the scoreless first half, each team recorded six shots and three saves, and Ithaca held a 5-2 edge in penalty corners earned. In the second half, however, Cortland outshot Ithaca by a 16-3 margin and took five corners to just one by the Bombers.
Cortland will travel to second-ranked and 2010 national runner-up Messiah College in Grantham, Pa., for a 12 p.m. game on Saturday.
