Cortland Plays to 2-2 Tie vs. RIT

Junior Max Schmitt tied the game with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior Max Schmitt (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Reinbek) scored with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation as the Cortland men's soccer team played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie versus RIT Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex.

Sophomore Bryan Merlos (Harrison) also scored a goal for the Red Dragons (1-2-1), while seniors Lukas Wear (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) and Brendan Wells (Wantagh/MacArthur) each recorded an assist. Freshman goalie Brian McNicholas (Stony Point/North Rockland) made four saves.

Senior Dan Holowaty (Strongsville, OH/St. Ignatius) and junior Sean Coots (Binghamton/Johnson City) netted the goals for the Tigers (2-1-1). Junior Mike Allocco (Ballston Lake/Burnt Hills) and sophomore Andy Fleckenstein (Farmington/Victor) picked up assists. Sophomore goalie Sean Conway (Orchard Park) registered five saves.

Coots gave RIT the lead in the 43rd minute on a header in front off Allocco's serve from the left side after Cortland blocked a free kick. The Red Dragons evened the score at 1-1 in the 58th minute. Merlos one-timed a shot from six yards out on a loose ball after Wear made a touch in the box.

The Tigers regained the lead on Holowaty's team-high fifth goal of the season in the 69th minute. Holowaty took a pass from Fleckenstein near the top of the box on the right side and buried a left-footed shot from 18 yards inside the left post. Schmitt was able to score the game-tying goal in the 82nd minute. Wells sent a long throw in from the right side into the box. The ball bounced high to the left post where Schmitt drove a header inside the post for his second score of the season.

Less than a minute later, the Tigers had an excellent chance to score the game winner, but McNicholas made a save on Coot's one-time bid on a loose ball. Cortland had the best chance in the extra time to grab a win. In the 97th minute, sophomore Chris Barbosa (Carle Place) received a pass deep in the box and was all alone with Conway, who came off his line to deny Barbosa's shot.
