Cortland Opens Home Slate with 2-0 Win vs. Hamilton

Freshman Amanda Margolis' first-half goal proved to be the game winner
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team scored a goal in each half in defeating visiting Hamilton College, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon at the Jets Field on the SUNY Cortland campus. The Red Dragons improved to 3-2 with the win, while the Continentals fell to 1-2.

Freshman Amanda Margolis (Oceanside) and senior Jackie De Luise (Schenectady/Guilderland) scored the goals for Cortland with freshman Caitlin Guerra (Highland Falls/James I. O'Neill) and senior Kelly Wanser (East Northport/Northport) collecting assists. Graduate student Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) made five saves to record her third shutout of the season.

Sophomore Liza Gergenti (Warwick/Warwick Valley) and freshman Melanie Miller (Ringwood, NJ/Lakeland Regional) split time in goal for the Continentals. Gergenti stopped three shots in the first half, and Miller registered two saves over the final 45 minutes.

In the 13th minute of the game, Gergenti kept the contest scoreless when she made a diving save at the left post on Wanser's penalty-kick attempt after a Cortland player was dragged down in the box. Margolis, however, gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. After Guerra's initial shot was blocked, the ball bounced to Margolis who was able to one-time a shot inside the left post for her second goal of the season.

Hamilton's best opportunity to tie the game came in the 55th minute, but sophomore Emi Birch's (Steamboat Springs, CO) long, low shot from the right side just slid past the left post and over the end line. Cortland added an insurance goal from De Luise in the 80th minute. Wanser sent a pass from the left side to De Luise near the top of the box. De Luise split two defenders and beat Miller with a shot from eight yards into the left side of the goal. The Red Dragons nearly scored again in the 88th minute, but Miller charged off her line to stuff a shot by senior Bridgette DeSantis (Rotterdam/Mohonasen), who was all alone in front.
