Red Dragons Use Balanced Attack in 82-55 Rout vs. New Paltz

Kevin McMahon made 6-of-7 shots and finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Juniors Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) and Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) and sophomore Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) each scored 15 points and junior Brian Manning (Elmira/Southside) added 12 points as Cortland cruised past New Paltz, 82-55, in a SUNYAC contest. The Red Dragons improved to 10-4 overall and maintained their second-place spot in the league standings with a  6-2 mark.

McMahon hit 6-of-7 shots from the floor and led the Red Dragons with nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Winter distributed a game-high six assists and Hefele finished with seven rebounds.

Harris Wichard led New Paltz (6-7, 3-4 SUNYAC) with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Matt Devine (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Township) scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots.

Cortland fell behind 6-0 to start the game, but scored the next nine points and never trailed again. Leading 29-20 with 7:35 left in the half, the Red Dragons scored the next nine points – capped by a Winter three-pointer – and led 38-20 with 4:05 remaining.

Cortland led 46-24 at halftime and pushed its lead to 64-34 on two McMahon free throws with 11:17 remaining. The Hawks made a brief charge with 11 consecutive points, five by Devine, and were within 19 with 8:13 on the clock. The hosts, however, scored the next six points and led by at least 23 points the rest of the way.

The Red Dragons will host Utica College in a non-league game on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m.
