Cortland Men Third at RPI Kumpf Invitational; Brian Tobin Reaches 100-Win Mark

Brian Tobin has an overall men's dual-meet record of 102-33 in 10 seasons with the Red Dragons
TROY, N.Y. – Junior Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) won two races as Cortland finished third out of eight teams at the RPI Kumpf Men's Swimming and Diving Invitational. Ithaca won the meet with 676 points, followed by RPI with 495, Cortland with 484 and Oneonta with 229. Rounding out the field were Vassar (181), Clarkson (153), Skidmore (96) and Cobleskill (3).

The competition was also scored as dual meets between each of the schools. Cortland finished 6-1, with its only loss coming versus Ithaca. The Red Dragons improved to 7-4 on the season and 10th-year head coach Brian Tobin surpassed the career 100-win mark with Cortland's men's program. Tobin is currently 102-33 in men's dual meets (he's 92-26-1 as Cortland's women's head coach).

Maximowicz won the 50-yard freestyle (21.71) in a field of 31 swimmers and the 100-yard freestyle (49.13) in a 32-swimmer field. Junior Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) finished first out of 24 swimmers in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.90).

Junior Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool) was runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:17.58. Junior Matt Blaszak (West Seneca/West Seneca East) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.74), while sophomore Matt Distler (Glens Falls) posted third-place showings in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:25.26) and 500-yard freestyle (5:04.75). Freshman Alex Spatzer (Kenmore/Kenmore West) was fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.34).

Three other Red Dragons also earned top-five finishes with fifth-place efforts – senior Judd Simon (Oneida) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.28), sophomore Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) in the 100-yard freestyle (50.25) and senior Danny Salvatore (Clarence) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.20).

Cortland finished third in two relays. The 400-yard medley relay team of Simon, junior Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal), Strickland and Maximowicz was timed in 3:40.00, while the 400-yard freestyle relay unit of Blaszak, Distler, junior Greg Griffin (Dallas, TX/J.F. Kimball) and Strothenke finished in 3:19.88. The Red Dragons also earned a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle with sophomore Matt Latorre (Bethlehem), sophomore Gregory MacDonald (Monroe Township, NJ/St. Joseph's), senior Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) and freshman Antrico Forbes (Brooklyn/Ralph R. McKee) (3:23.29).
