Joey Christiano assisted on a Cortland second-period breakaway goal that drew the Red Dragons within 2-1
OSWEGO, N.Y. – Nationally second-ranked Oswego pulled away from a tight game with a goal late in the second period and two scores in the third as the Lakers defeated visiting Cortland, 5-1. Oswego improves to 13-2-2 overall and 7-0-2 in the SUNYAC. Cortland is 4-12-1 and 2-6-1.
Luke Moodie scored two goals, both in the final period, and assisted on a goal, for the hosts. David Titanic and Chris Carr each finished with a goal and an assist. Andrew Hare made 21 saves. Cortland freshman goalie Jeff Molne (Kinnelon, NJ/NY Apple Core) finished with 41 saves.
Oswego took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Titanic 2:45 into the contest on a shot from in front after the Lakers controlled a loose puck. Molner, however, made 22 saves in the first period to keep the Red Dragons within a goal after 20 minutes.
The Lakers extended the lead to 2-0 on a Carr tally on an odd-man rush 12:39 into the second period. Cortland got on the board just 1:23 later when sophomore
Mike Henrici (North Haven, CT/Manhattanville College) scored his second goal of the season off an assist from senior
Joey Christiano (Rochester/Port Hope Predators). Christiano led a 2-on-1 break and forced an Oswego defender to commit to him before sliding the puck across to Henrici for the tap-in.
Oswego went ahead 3-1 with only 45.4 seconds remaining in the second period when Paul Rodrigues buried a rebound into an empty net at the near post during a Laker power play. Moodie scored on a breakaway 1:15 into the third period to increase the lead to 4-1, then tallied his second goal of the game and 11th of the season shorthanded with 13:56 remaining.
Cortland travels to Elmira for a non-league game Saturday at 7 p.m.
