CORTLAND, N.Y. – The combination of junior Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks), sophomore Matt Latorre (Bethlehem), freshman Antrico Forbes (Brooklyn/Ralph R. McKee) and sophomore Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) won the decisive 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:28.43 as Cortland defeated visiting New Paltz, 137.5-124.5, in dual-meet action. The Red Dragons upped their record to 8-4 and New Paltz fell to 4-7 with the decision.

The teams entered the final relay tied at 122.5. Cortland earned 11 points for its winning performance, and the Red Dragons also claimed the four second-place points behind senior Danny Salvatore (Clarence), senior Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport), junior Matt Blaszak (West Seneca/West Seneca East) and sophomore Matt Distler (Glens Falls), who finished in 1:30.78.

Maximowicz won the 50-yard freestyle (22.17) and Strothenke won the 100-yard freestyle (50.11). Junior Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) captured the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.53) and senior Judd Simon (Oneida) was the 200-yard individual medley winner (2:04.51).

Nelson, Salvatore, junior Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool) and Maximowicz won the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay in 1:39.82. Senior Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor), junior Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal), Scheemaker and Strothenke finished second in 1:40.34.

Drew was the second-place finisher in both the 100-yard backstroke (56.27) and 200-yard backstroke (2:04.19). Nelson was runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:24.15) and Simon finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.30).

Also earning individual second-place finishes were Salvatore in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.91), Distler in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.77), Scheemaker in the 100-yard butterfly (55.31) and freshman Alex Spatzer (Kenmore/Kenmore West) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.23).

Cortland returns to action when it hosts Oswego on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 4 p.m.
