ELMIRA, N.Y. – The nationally 11th-ranked Elmira men's hockey team broke open a tie game with a four-goal second period and went on to defeat Cortland, 6-2, in non-conference action Saturday night. The Red Dragons dropped to 4-13-1 with the loss, while the Soaring Eagles improved to 12-5-2.

Sophomore Mike Henrici (North Haven, CT/Manhattanville) and freshman Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) scored Cortland's goals with seniors Peter Lompado (Staten Island/Minnesota St.-Mankato) and Jake Saville (Bellingham, WA/Marquette Rangers) and freshman Tyler Virgoe (Aurora, ON/Couchiching Tigers) each recording one assist. Senior Mike Reilly (New York/Bismarck Bobcats) started in goal and made 29 saves through two periods before giving way to junior Brittan Kuhlman (Elkhorn, NE/Winnipeg Saints), who stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced in the third period.

John Clewlow led Elmira with three goals, Brendan Sanders contributed a goal and an assist and Kevin Willer and Wes Consorti netted one goal apiece. Darcy Vaillancourt collected three assists. Darren McDonald ran his record to 8-4-2 with 21 saves.

Consorti opened the scoring at the nine minute, 14 second mark of the first period with a power-play goal, but Henrici tied the game for Cortland just over three minutes later with a man-advantage score of his own.

The Soaring Eagles took control of the game with a four-goal outburst in the second period, with three of the scores coming off Clewlow's stick. Clewlow netted his first of the night at 11:01 before Willer made it a 3-1 game at 17:36. Clewlow then closed the period with back-to-back goals just seven seconds apart, at 18:20 and 18:27, with the teams skating four aside.
