Cortland Men Fourth at Upstate Challenge

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Ryan Pericozzi (Lancaster) won the pole vault and two Red Dragons posted runner-up finishes as Cortland finished fourth at the Cornell University Upstate Challenge.

The top three finishers were Division I schools. Cornell won meet with 246 points, followed by the University at Buffalo, Syracuse, Cortland, Binghamton and Ithaca.

Pericozzi cleared 4.90 meters (16' 0.75”), an ECAC Div. III Championship qualifying height, for his pole vault victory. Junior Eric Banks (Westbury) finished second in the 400-meter dash (50.77) and sophomore Cody Amengual (West Babylon) was second in the 800 meters (1:57.66).

Junior Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) finished sixth in the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying distance of 15.02 meters (49' 3.5”) and sophomore Brandon Loomis (Rocky Point) posted an ECAC height of 1.94 meters (6' 4.25”) to finish sixth in the high jump.

Junior Steven Damiani (West Islip) turned in a sixth-place time of 23.83 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Three Red Dragons placed in the top 10 in the pole vault – freshman Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was seventh (4.50 meters – 14' 9”), junior Daniel Fugazot (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) was ninth (4.20 meters – 13' 9.25”) and sophomore Besnik Palushi (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) finished 10th (4.05 meters – 13' 3.5”).

Junior Andrew Greenberg (Suffern) finished sixth in the 500-meter dash in 1:10.54. In the 400-meter dash, freshman Chris Grisolia (Commack) finished seventh (52.56) and freshman Rob Schenke (Kings Park) placed 10th (52.95). In the 800 meters, freshman Tim Odin (Northport) finished eighth (2:02.00) and freshman Jared Walther (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) was ninth (2:02.25).

Cortland earned two top-eight placements in the 5,000 meters as freshman Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) finished seventh (16:17.53) and junior Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished eighth (16:29.72).

Junior Robert Brower (Massapequa) finished eighth in the heptathlon with 3,723 points. Junior Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) was ninth in the mile (4:30.39), followed by junior Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) in 10th place (4:30.41). Sophomore Jared Thomson (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) finished 10th in the weight throw (13.17 meters – 43' 2.5”) and junior Erik LeRoy (Kings Park) was 10th in the long jump (6.46 meters – 21' 2.5”).
