Cortland Repeats as RPI Invitational Champion

Abigail MacDonald won the 200-yard backstroke and finished second in the 200-yard individual medley
TROY, N.Y. – Cortland won seven individual events, including two each by freshman Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) and sophomore Sarah Culmo (West Islip), and the Red Dragons successfully defended its team title at the six-team RPI Invitational.

The Red Dragons have finished first at RPI five of the last six years. They finished this year's meet with 649 points, followed by RPI (457), Oneonta (445.5), William Smith (352), Skidmore (260.5) and Cobleskill (60). The invitational was also scored as dual meets between each school. Cortland finished 5-0 and is now 8-2 on the season.

Caputo won the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.17) and 500-yard freestyle (5:27.25), while Culmo was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle (25.47) and 100-yard freestyle (55.99).

Junior Abigail MacDonald (East Amherst/Williamsville North) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.75) and finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.09). Senior Sara Wynne (Wantagh) won three-meter diving (221.80 points) and placed second in one-meter diving (205.30 points). Sophomore Lindsay Wigderson (Webster/Webster Thomas) took top honors in one-meter diving (216.40 points) and was fourth in three-meter diving (191.75 points).

Cortland also won both relays. MacDonald, sophomore Chrisanna Hickey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill), junior Jessica Evans (Hamburg) and Culmo won the 400-yard medley relay (4:10.59). Freshman Michaela Auer (Oswego), Caputo, sophomore M.K. Dugue (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and senior Michelle Seeger (Oneonta) earned top honors in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:52.54).

Hickey was the runner-up in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.14) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.69) and Evans finished third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.42) and 100-yard freestyle (57.02). Seeger was third in the 50-yard freestyle (25.85).

Junior Kelsey Roe (Auburn) finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:36.40) and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.89). Auer finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (26.64), sophomore Caitlin Lanigan (West Seneca/West Seneca West) was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.36) and freshman Ashley Sherard (Valley Stream) placed fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.34).

In addition to the relay wins, the Red Dragons also had relay teams finish in fourth place - junior Katherine Harris (Long Beach), Auer, Seeger and Lanigan in the 400-yard medley relay (4:20.46) and Harris, junior Molly Miller (Eden), Sherard and Roe in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:56.81).

Cortland will host Oswego in a dual meet on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 4 p.m.
