Red Dragons Record Eight ECAC Performances at Upstate Challenge

ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) won the pentathlon and Cortland turned in eight ECAC Championship qualifying performances at the Cornell University Upstate Challenge. The Red Dragons finished sixth in the final team standings that included Division I schools Cornell, Buffalo, Syracuse and Binghamton.

Schafer finished first in the pentathlon, which was conducted on Friday, with a score of 2,887 points. She registered times of 9.75 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and 2:46.68 in the 800 meters and distances of 4.85 meters (15' 11”) in the long jump, 1.54 meters (5' 0.5”) in the high jump and 8.69 meters (28' 6.25”) in the shot put.

Freshman Taylor Hudson (Victor) finished third in the high jump at 1.60 meters (5' 3”) and junior Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) finished fifth in the triple jump at 10.99 meters (36' 0.75”), both ECAC qualifiers.

Senior Alyson Dalton (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill), junior Jordyn Naylon (Fairport) and freshman Bori Toszer (Homer) each qualified for ECACs in the 3,000-meter run. Dalton placed eighth (10:20:40), Naylon finished ninth (10:24.17) and Toszer was 12th (10:31.48).

Freshman Shay Walker (Harriman/Monroe-Woodbury) posted ECAC times in two events. She finished eighth in the 60-meter dash in 8.00 seconds and ninth in the 200-meter dash in 26.68 seconds. Sophomore Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) also recorded an ECAC time in the 60-meter dash with her ninth-place time of 8.06 seconds.

Four Red Dragons finished in the top 10 in the 400-meter dash. Senior Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland) finished sixth (1:01.49), freshman Kiki Jones (Binghamton) was seventh (1:01.78), junior Alexis Grable (Pine Bush) placed ninth (1:01.97) and sophomore Trisha Clark (Pulaski) finished 10th (1:02.26).

Sophomore Cait Reilly (Warwick/Monroe-Woodbury) finished sixth in the 800 meters (2:25.43), while junior Alexis Fairbanks (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) was ninth (2:27.65).

Sophomore Kelly Hugo (Highland) placed eighth in the pole vault by clearing 3.15 meters (10' 4”). Sophomore Lexi Budd (Riverhead) tied for eighth in the high jump with a height of 1.55 meters (5' 1”) and junior Brittany Krivicich (Middletown/Pine Bush) tied for 10th in the event at 1.50 meters (4' 11”).

Junior Chelsea Lachman (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) registered two top-10 finishes. She was ninth in the shot put (10.59 meters – 34' 9”) and 10th in the weight throw (10.71 meters – 35' 1.75”). Junior Alana Hotchkiss (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) finished 10th in the triple jump (10.05 meters – 32' 11.75”).
