FREDONIA, N.Y. – Junior
Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool) won two events and was part of a winning relay team as the Cortland men's swimming and diving team concluded the dual-meet portion of its schedule with a 158-135 victory at Fredonia. Cortland finishes with a 10-4 dual record – its eighth straight season with at least 10 wins.
Strickland won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.05) and 400-yard individual medley (4:30.99). He also swam the butterfly leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:38.62) that also featured senior
Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor) in the backstroke, junior
Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal) in the breaststroke and junior
Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) in the freestyle.
Maximowicz won the 100-yard freestyle (49.32) and placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.15). Junior
Matt Blaszak (West Seneca/West Seneca East) was the 200-yard freestyle winner (1:48.60) and finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.44).

Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:28.95) and freshman
Alex Spatzer (Kenmore/Kenmore West) touched the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:09.40. Senior
Danny Salvatore (Clarence) captured top honors in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.15).
Cortland earned the top three spots in three different events. In the 200-yard freestyle, Blaszak was followed by sophomore
Matt Distler (Glens Falls) in second place (1:51.67) and Salvatore in third place (1:51.88). Strickland led the sweep in the 100-yard breaststroke that featured sophomore
Sean Iles (Theresa/Indian River) in second place (1:05.14) and sophomore Gregory MacDonald (Monroe Township, NJ/St. Joseph's) in third place (1:06.74). And Salvatore's win the 200-yard breaststroke was part of a three-man finish with MacQuarrie in second place (2:20.00) and freshman
Mike Sutz (Orchard Park) in third place (2:24.64).
Drew posted second-place finishes in both the 100-yard backstroke (56.39) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.13). Senior
Judd Simon (Oneida) finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (55.62) and senior
Travis Burke (Massapequa) placed second in three-meter diving (260.70 points). Cortland also finished second in the 800-yard freestyle relay with Nelson, Simon, Salvatore and senior
Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) completing the race in 7:31.97.
Cortland will send divers to a recently scheduled invitational hosted by Ithaca College on Sunday, Jan. 29, at noon.
