Cortland Leads Early Before Falling at Oswego, 7-4, to Start Season

A.J. Moyer finished with two goals and one assist
OSWEGO, N.Y. – Seven different players scored one goal each as Oswego, last season's NCAA Div. III runner-up, rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Cortland, 7-4, in the season and SUNYAC opener for both teams.

Junior A.J. Moyer (Perkasie, PA/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) led Cortland with two goals and one assist and senior Michael Lysyj (Hillsborough, NJ/South Shore Kings) finished with a goal and two assists. Senior Chris Kaleta (Hamburg/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored a goal, freshman Ryan Wagner (Buffalo/Aberdeen Wings) notched two assists in his Red Dragon debut and freshman Adam Diorio (Staten Island/NY Bobcats) picked up one assist. Junior goalie Geoff Sadjadi (Faribault, MN/St. Thomas), playing in his first game in a Cortland uniform, made 20 saves.

For Oswego, Luke Moodie, Jon Whitelaw and Chris Ayotte each finished with a goal and two assists. Tim Carr, Chris Brown, Jesse McConney and Zach Josepher each scored once and Paul Rodrigues assisted on two goals. Goalie Dan Jones entered 5:26 into the game with Oswego trailing 2-0 and made 17 saves the rest of the way. Starter Andrew Hare recorded one save.

Cortland took the lead when Kaleta put in a rebound of a Wagner shot just 3:02 into the contest. The lead grew to two goals when Moyer, with the teams each down a skater, knocked in a shot from the right face-off circle just inside the far post at the 5:26 mark.

Oswego scored the final three goals of the period to take a 3-2 lead. Moodie scored from the slot for a power-play goal 8:39 into the period, followed by a Whitelaw goal off a Rodrigues feed that tied the game at the 15:34 mark. McConney gave the Lakers the lead with 2:54 remaining in the first with a power-play goal that clanged off the left pipe into the net.

The hosts took a 4-2 lead 6:03 into the second period when Josepher scored on an odd-man rush. Cortland got back to within 4-3 on Moyer's power-play goal 14:02 into the period, but Ayotte responded for Oswego less than three minutes later and the Lakers led 5-3 after two frames.

Cortland successfully fought off a five-minute major to start the third period, then cut Oswego's lead to 5-4 when Lysyj scored on a deflection in front of the cage with 11:53 remaining. After a Cortland timeout with 7:17 left, Oswego won the ensuing faceoff and Carr scored on a slap shot from the left point to give the Lakers a 6-4 lead with 7:13 on the clock.

Cortland had a power play with 1:39 remaining, and also elected to pull Sadjadi, but Oswego ended up finishing the scoring on a Brown empty-net goal with 1:27 left.

Cortland will play a non-league game at Hobart Saturday at 4 p.m.
