NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Cortland women's volleyball team reached the 30-win mark for the season after splitting two matches on Day 1 of the Christopher Newport Invitational. The nationally 16th-ranked Red Dragons lost in three sets to 17th-ranked Salisbury University, but bounced back to sweep Lynchburg College.
Cortland (30-4) has won 30 or more matches for the 24th time in school history and for the sixth time in head coach
Pam Hoerup's eight seasons. The Red Dragons will finish the tournament and the regular season with matches Saturday versus Virginia Wesleyan at noon and the nationally fourth-ranked host Captains at 4:30 p.m.
Salisbury, which improved to 30-2 with the win, is the first team to sweep Cortland since the Red Dragons lost 3-0 to Skidmore in September 2010. Senior
Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) led Cortland with eight kills and added seven digs. Senior
Natalie Zacpal (Islip) tallied six kills and two blocks and junior
Ava Hintz (East Aurora) totaled four kills.
Freshman
Sydney Hayward (Trumansburg) led the team with eight digs. Junior
Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) and senior
Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) had six digs each and junior
Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) recorded two blocks.
In its win against Lynchburg (22-7), Cortland was paced by freshman
Kim Givelechian's (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) 10 kills and 12 digs. She had two errors in 14 attempts for a .571 attack percentage. Zacpal put down nine kills and four blocks, Hintz finished with eight kills, three aces and four digs and Coyle had eight kills and 11 digs.
Guercio amassed 37 assists and eight digs. Silk led the team with 14 digs.
