Cortland Men Place Second at SUNYAC Championships

Junior Cody Amengual earned induction into the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame with his fourth-place finish
BROCTON, N.Y. - The Cortland men's cross country team finished in second place out of 10 schools at the 2012 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships. The meet was hosted by Fredonia St. at Lake Erie State Park.

Geneseo won its fourth straight league title with 20 points, followed by Cortland (35), Oneonta (111), Buffalo St. (128), Fredonia St. (141), Plattsburgh (151), Brockport (170), New Paltz (237), Oswego (240) and Potsdam (330).

Junior Cody Amengual (West Babylon) finished in fourth place to earn first team All-SUNYAC honors. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:34.52. The top-seven individuals are first team all-conference. In addition, Amengual's's finish earned him a spot in the SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Hall of Fame, which is awarded to runners who place in the top five once, the top 10 twice or the top 15 three times.

Two other Red Dragons earned first team all-conference honors, while three more garnered second team All-SUNYAC accolades for finishing between eighth and 15th. Sophomore Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) placed sixth (26:42.89) and junior Tim Lee (West Babylon) was seventh (26:52.93). Marcantonio earned Hall of Fame honors last season. Senior Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished eighth (26:54.40), sophomore Jarred Iacovelli (Manawakin, NJ/Southern Regional) was 10th (26:59.45) and senior Joe Blazey (Newark) crossed the finish line in 12th place (27:03.23) Senior Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) narrowly missed second team all-conference honors with a 17th-place finish (27:24.75). 

Geneseo's Alex Brimstein won the individual title in 26:25.08 followed closely by teammate Chris Mateer in second (26:26.45).

Cortland is idle next weekend and will compete at the NCAA Div. III Atlantic Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 11, in Rochester, N.Y.
