Red Dragon Offense Clicks in 7-0 Win at Morrisville St.

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Cortland field hockey team built a 5-0 lead at the half and went on to defeat Morrisville St., 7-0, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons won their third straight game, improving to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while the Mustangs fell to 2-12 and 0-5.

Senior Sara Woodward (Ancram/Pine Plains) and junior Erin Smith (Greene) paced the Cortland offense with two goals each. Junior Mallory Guerin (Port Jefferson), sophomore Abbey Wentlent (Greene) and freshman Emmajean Speer (Cazenovia) each chipped in with a goal, and junior Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown) collected two assists. Sophomore goalie Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) made one save in 50 minutes, 47 seconds before giving way to senior Emily von Schondorf (Webster/Webster Thomas), who stopped one shot over the final 19:13. Senior Liz DeWaters (Lockport/Royalton-Hartland) and freshman Amber Czaja (Cheektowaga/West Seneca East) recorded a defensive save.

Morrisville St. goalkeeper Ellen DePasquale made 13 saves and allowed five goals in the first half, while Nicole Gregg turned aside 12 shots and gave up two goals in the second half. Breanna Roadarmel registered a defensive save.

Smith gave Cortland the lead just 2:01 into the game when she scored from the top of the circle. Ninety seconds later, Speer tallied her first collegiate goal with a deflection at the left post. Smith scored her second of the game at 15:55, dribbling through the defense and finishing off a shot from the right side. Less than two minutes later, Guerin increased the lead to 4-0 with a tip at the left post, and Wentlent concluded the scoring in the first half when she beat DePasquale one-on-one.

Woodward notched both of her goals in the second half. At the 41:48 mark, she scored on a one-timer after Roadarmel's defensive save, and wrapped up the scoring with a goal off her own rebound with 13 seconds remaining.
