ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Cortland men's cross country team finished third out of 44 schools at the NCAA Div. III Atlantic Regional Championships contested at Genesee Valley Park. NYU was the team champion with 50 points and Geneseo was the runner-up with 59 points. Cortland placed third with 94 points followed by host the University of Rochester with 131 points and St. Lawrence with 146 points.
NYU and Geneseo earn automatic bids to next week's NCAA Div. III Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., by finishing in the top two. Cortland, Rochester and St. Lawrence are eligible for at-large berths by placing in the top five – those berths will be announced Sunday on NCAA.com.
Cortland's top five runners all finished in the top 35 to earn all-region honors. Senior
Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) crossed the line ninth in 25:41.7 over 8,000 meters. A total of 297 runners competed. Geneseo senior Alex Brimstein won the race in 25:14.4.
Sophomore
Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) finished 10th in 25:44.6), sophomore
Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) crossed the line 20th in 26:01.9 and junior
Tim Lee (West Babylon) was close behind in 22nd place (26:03.9). Senior
Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) rounded out Cortland's scorers with a 33rd-place finish in 26:16.6. Senior
Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was 58th in 26:41.1, and junior
Cody Amengual (West Babylon) finished 151st in 27:58.6.
Hopkins and Marcantonio are guaranteed spots at next week's national meet if Cortland is not chosen as an at-large team. The top seven individuals not on a qualifying team earn national berths.
