Culmo's Three Victories Help Cortland Defeat Geneseo, 156-138

Sarah Culmo won three freestyle races and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team
GENESEO, N.Y. – Junior Sarah Culmo (West Islip) won all three of her individual events and sophomore Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) and freshman Miranda Fergus (Pleasant Valley/Millbrook) were each double winners as Cortland beat host Geneseo, 156-138, in a dual meet.

Culmo took top honors in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.79), 50-yard freestyle (25.25) and 100-yard freestyle (55.19). She also anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:42.49) that also featured senior Jessica Evans (Hamburg), junior M.K. Dugue (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and sophomore Lauren Kaplowitz (Stamford, CT/West Hill).

Caputo recorded winning times of 11:07.09 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 5:20.10 in the 500-yard freestyle. The Red Dragons swept the top three spots in the 1,000, with Caputo followed by freshman Chelsey Simon (Oneida) in second (11:28.56) and freshman Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) in third (11:29.67).

Fergus won both diving events. She scored 227.15 points on the 1-meter board and 234.55 points on the 3-meter board. Junior Chrisanna Hickey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:17.88) and finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.63).

Senior Abigail MacDonald (East Amherst/Williamsville North) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:17.11). In addition, Evans finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.42) and junior Lindsay Wigderson (Webster/Webster Thomas) placed second in 3-meter diving (192.60 pts.).

Cortland (1-2) will host Buffalo State Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m.
