CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland men's hockey team scored two short-handed goals and one power-play goal and defeated Fredonia St., 4-2, Friday night in the home opener for the Red Dragons. Cortland improved to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the SUNYAC with the win, while the Blue Devils fell to 4-4 and 3-3.

Seniors Chris Kaleta (Hamburg/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Michael Lysyj (Hillsborough, NJ/South Shore Kings) led the Red Dragons with one goal and one assist each. Juniors Adam Bevilacqua (Toronto, ON/St. Norbert) and A.J. Moyer (Perkasie, PA/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) added one goal apiece, and freshman Adam Diorio (Staten Island/NY Bobcats) collected an assist. Junior goalie Lyle Rocker (Buffalo/Wisconsin-River Falls) made 32 saves.

Senior Mat Hehr (Sherwood Park, AB/Sherwood Park) and sophomore Stephen Castriota (Bellport/NY Bobcats) netted Fredonia's goals with senior Brett Mueller (Queensbury/Sequin), sophomore Brian Doust (Calgary, AB/Canmore) and freshman Taylor Bourne (Calgary, AB/Olds) recording assists. Junior goalie Mark Friesen (Calgary, AB/Langley) turned aside 19 shots.

After a scoreless first period, the Red Dragons tallied two short-handed goals to open up a 2-0 lead. Down two skaters, Moyer forced a turnover and beat Friesen with a move on his backhand at 14 minutes, 40 seconds of the second period. Just under four minutes later, Bevilacqua picked up a loose puck and skated in with Lysyj after a Blue Devil defenseman fell. Bevilacqua deked Friesen and tucked a shot under the crossbar.

Kaleta pushed the lead to 3-0 just 29 seconds into the third period when he one-timed a shot from the slot on the power play for his team-high seventh goal of the season. Fredonia answered quickly to make it a 3-2 game. At 1:41, Hehr scored on a deflection in front with the man advantage, and Castriota knocked a loose puck into an empty net at 2:06. Late in the game, the Blue Devils pulled Friesen for an extra skater, Kaleta knocked down the puck in the neutral zone and Lysyj buried a shot into the open goal with 17 seconds remaining to seal the win.
