CORTLAND, N.Y. – Four Red Dragons won individual events as the Cortland men's swimming and diving team lost its home dual-meet opener to Ithaca College, 184-114. Cortland is 0-2 on the season and Ithaca improves to 3-0.
Freshman
Andrew Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:11.43, out-touching his opponent at the wall by just one hundredth of a second. Senior
Dan Maximowicz (Chenango Fork) captured the 50-yard freestyle in 22.37 seconds, senior
Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:59.95 and freshman
Mathew Hasbrouck (New Paltz) was the 100-yard butterfly winner in 53.73 seconds.
Cortland won the opening 200-yard medley relay as senior
Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool), senior
Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal), Hasbrouck and Maximowicz posted a time of 1:38.82, just seven hundredths of a second ahead of Ithaca's top entry.
MacQuarrie finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.42 and Hasbrouck was second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:02.07, losing by just five hundredths of a second. Freshman
Reeve Callen (Oswego) was barely edged in the 200-yard freestyle as his time of 1:46.88 was only a hundredth of a second behind the Ithaca winner.
In addition, the combination of freshman
Mark Schoenherr (New Rochelle/Iona Prep), Maximowicz, junior
Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) and Callen finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:27.42).
Cortland will compete at Geneseo next Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m.
