Red Dragons Skate to 3-3 Tie vs. #7 Plattsburgh

Senior Matty Davie gave Cortland a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the season
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Michael Lysyj (Hillsborough, NJ/South Shore Kings) scored the game-tying goal seven minutes, eight seconds into the third period as the Cortland men's hockey team played to a 3-3 tie versus nationally seventh-ranked Plattsburgh Friday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena.

Senior Matty Davie (Brooklyn/NY Apple Core) and junior Mike Henrici (North Haven, CT/Manhattanville College) also scored goals for the Red Dragons (2-6-2, 2-4-1 SUNYAC). Juniors Adam Bevilacqua (Toronto, ON/St. Norbert) and A.J. Moyer (Perkasie, PA/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and sophomore Tyler Virgoe (Aurora, ON/Couchiching Tigers) each recorded an assist. Junior goalie Lyle Rocker (Buffalo/Wisconsin-River Falls) made 32 saves, including 14 in the third period.

Senior Jared Docking (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Canadians), sophomore Alex Brenton (Kanata, ON/Kemptville 73s) and freshman Luke Baleshta (Cambridge, ON/Elmira Sugar Kings) netted one goal apiece for the Cardinals (6-2-1, 5-1-1). Sophomore Mark Constantine (Haddonfield, NJ/The Hill School) and freshmen Connor Gorman (Shrewsbury, MA/New Hampshire Monarchs), Dillan Fox (Hummelstown, PA/Walpole Express) and Andrew Smith (Kitchener, ON/Elmira Sugar Kings) each chipped in with an assist. Junior goalie Mathieu Cadieux (Oshawa, ON/Cobourg Cougars) registered 29 saves.

Brenton gave Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead at the 5:00 mark of the opening period when he knocked in his own rebound after skating in from the right corner. Just 45 seconds later, Henrici tied the game with an unassisted goal that deflected in off a defenseman's stick who was trying to block the shot. Davie gave Cortland a 2-1 lead at 8:13 of the first period. Bevilacqua forced a turnover at the right side boards and fed a pass to the right side where Davie beat Cadieux with a wrist shot. Docking tied the game just 1:38 before the end of the period with a goal that deflected in off a Cortland skate after he threw the puck in front from the right side.

Baleshta made it a 3-2 game in favor of the Cardinals at 19:09 of the second period with the two-man advantage, one-timing a shot in close on the left side of the goal. Lysyj sent the game to extra time at 7:08 of the third. Virgoe slipped a pass into the slot from the right side where Lysyj one-timed a wrist shot through traffic.

Plattsburgh out shot Cortland, 3-1, in the five-minute overtime, but neither team generated a quality scoring chance. The Cardinals went 1-for-8 on the power play, while Cortland was unsuccessful on its only attempt.
