Two Wins Among Highlights for Cortland Men at Cornell Relays

Mike Kelly ran on the winning distance medley relay team and the ECAC-qualifying, third-place 4x800-meter relay squad
ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland recorded numerous top-10 finishes, including two victories, as the Red Dragons started the season at the Cornell Relays men's indoor track and field meet.

The distance medley relay team of sophomore Tim Odin (Northport), freshman Sean Swartwood (Waverly), junior Mike Kelly (Coram/Longwood) and senior Pat Fannon (West Islip) finished first in 10:41.93. The time is ranked first nationally in Div. III among results reported by Sunday afternoon.

Senior Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) and sophomore Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) finished first (14:59.94) and second (15:03.20), respectively, in the 5,000-meter run. The times are currently the top two nationally in Div. III and are both ECAC qualifiers.

Junior P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) finished third in the triple jump with an ECAC-qualifying distance of 14.33 meters (47' 0.25”) that ranks second nationally. Sophomore Kenneth Sinclair (Rochester/James Monroe) also qualified for ECACs in the event with a fifth-place effort of 13.73 meters (45' 0.5”).

Junior Cody Amengual (West Babylon) reached the ECAC standard with his fourth-place time of 8:47.44 in the 3,000-meter run. In the weight throw, senior Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and junior Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) each qualified for the ECACs. Wilson finished sixth (15.70 meters – 51' 6.25”) and Prendergast was eighth (15.41 meters – 50' 6.75”).

The 4x800-meter relay also registered an ECAC qualifying performance as freshman Julio Melendez (Valley Cottage/Nyack), Kelly, sophomore Cameron Rodgers (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) and junior Dylan Coppola (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) finished third in 8:01.38.

Sophomore Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished sixth in the pole vault with a height of 4.50 meters (14' 9”), currently tied for first nationally. Cortland claimed four of the top five spots in the 5,000 meters. In addition to Hopkins and Marcantonio, senior Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished fourth (15:34.39) and junior Tim Lee (West Babylon) was fifth (15:34.61).

Junior Stephan Linton (Roosevelt) finished fifth in the 300-meter dash (35.31), with senior Eric Banks (Westbury) placing eighth (35.65). Three Red Dragons earned top-10 showings in the shot put. Senior Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) finished seventh (14.24 meters – 46' 8.75”), Wilson was ninth (13.49 meters – 44' 3.25”) and Prendergast placed 10th (13.23 meters – 43' 5”).

Junior Ryan Perry (Buffalo/Williamsville North) and sophomore Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) finished ninth (8:53.98) and 10th (8:54.84) in the 3,000-meter run. Junior Bryan Smith (Tully) finished ninth in the long jump (6.45 meters – 21' 2”), senior Mike Ofosu (Accra, Ghana/Shaker (NY)) was 10th in the triple jump (13.03 meters – 42' 9”) and sophomore Nick Avossa (Kingston) finished 10th in the 60-meter hurdles (8.90).
