Red Dragons Fall to Buffalo St., 4-3, on Late Power-Play Goal

Senior Ryan Durocher gave Cortland a 1-0 lead just 1:25 into the game
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior Drew Klin (Lancaster/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored a power-play goal with three minutes, 21 seconds left in regulation as the Buffalo St. men's hockey team defeated Cortland, 4-3, Friday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons fell to 5-16-1 overall and 3-9-1 in the conference, while the Bengals improved to 11-10-2 and 7-6-1.

Seniors Ryan Durocher (Canton/Boston Bulldogs), Peter Lompado (Staten Island/Minnesota St.-Mankato) and Joey Christiano (Rochester/Port Hope Predators) each scored a goal for Cortland. Senior Ryan Markell (Canal Winchester, OH/Ohio St.), junior Adam Bevilacqua (Toronto, ON/St. Norbert), sophomores Matt McNamee (Sandy, UT/Weyburn Red Wings) and Stephen Nardi (Plainedge/NY Bobcats) and freshman Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) recorded one assist apiece. Senior goalie Mike Reilly (New York/Bismarck Bobcats) made 24 saves.

Juniors Trevor McKinney (Oakwood, ON/Peterborough Liftlock Stars) and Justin Knee (Centralia, ON/Waterloo Siskins) and sophomore Shane Avery (Fort Covington/Cornwall Colts) added goals for the Bengals, junior Matt Bessing (Elma/SUNY Plattsburgh) collected two assists and five other players each contributed one assist. Sophomore goalie Kevin Carr (Unionville, ON/Atlanta Jr. Knights) turned aside 30 shots.

Durocher gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead just 1:25 into the game when he scored a wraparound goal after collecting a rebound. McKinney tied the game at 14:48 of the first on a backhander from the left side that slid inside the right post.

The Bengals opened up a 3-1 lead after two periods with the only two goals of the stanza. Avery scored on a rebound right in front at 2:08 after Reilly stopped a shot from the point, and Knee deflected a point shot past Reilly at 14:27, just six seconds after going on the power play.

Cortland battled back to tie the game in a 1:43 span in the third period. Lompado made it a 3-2 game at the 5:37 mark with two seconds remaining on a two-man advantage when his one-time slap shot from the left face-off circle found the top right corner. At 7:20, Christiano tied the score at 3-3 on a rebound goal after Carr stopped Nardi's point shot. Bessing set up the game winner after he put a shot on goal following an end-to-end rush. Reilly made the save, but Klin knocked the loose puck into the goal through traffic in front. Cortland pulled Reilly for the final 59 seconds but couldn't score the equalizer.
