Cortland Men Break League 200 Medley Relay Mark, Remain in Title Hunt at SUNYAC Championships

Danny Salvatore set a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke and swam the breaststroke leg on the conference record-setting 200-yard medley relay
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland set a conference record in the 200-yard medley relay and senior Danny Salvatore (Clarence) broke the school record with a runner-up finish in the 100-yard breaststroke during the second day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming and Diving Championships at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.

Geneseo and Cortland are in a tight battle for the team title with one day remaining. Geneseo, which has won the last 13 SUNYAC titles, leads with 479 points. The Red Dragons are second with 470 points, followed by Oneonta with 286 and New Paltz with 248. Nine teams are competing.

The quartet of junior Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool), Salvatore, senior Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) and junior Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.98 to establish new conference, meet and school records. Former Red Dragons Matt Young, Brett Poffenbarger, Drew Hilker and Dan Evans held those records with their time of 1:34.13 in 2009.

Salvatore finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.86 seconds. His preliminary time of 57.72 seconds is a new school record, eclipsing Brett Humphreys' performance of 57.89 seconds in 2006. All individual champions at the meet earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors. Second-place and third-place individual finishers are awarded second-team all-league status.
