ONEONTA, N.Y. – Junior guards
Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) and
Brian Manning (Elmira/Southside) combined for 39 points as Cortland defeated host Oneonta, 73-51. The Red Dragons improved to 16-6 with the triumph.
Cortland's win, combined with Buffalo State's home loss to Brockport, puts the Red Dragons in sole possession of second place in the SUNYAC with an 11-4 record and three games remaining. Oswego has clinched the regular-season title with a 15-0 mark to date. Buffalo State is third at 10-5, followed by Brockport and Geneseo in a tie for fourth with 9-6 marks.
Smith scored 22 points, 18 in the first half. He finished the game 9-of-12 from the field overall and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Manning made 5-of-7 three-pointers and scored all 17 of his points in the second half. His five treys are a new career best.
Sophomore
Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) scored nine points and junior
Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) led the team with eight rebounds. Junior
Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) and sophomore
Maurice Kearney (Uniondale) recorded three assists each.
Cortland shot 57 percent from the field, hitting exactly 13-of-23 field goals in each half. The Red Dragons made 11-of-22 three-pointers.
Frankie Kelly scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds and handed out three assists for Oneonta (2-21, 1-15 SUNYAC). Nick Sarchioto finished with eight points and Dan McLaren pulled down five rebounds.
Cortland led 34-22 at halftime, but Oneonta was within eight at 42-34 after a Ryan Clark layup with 12:38 remaining. Cortland put the game away with a 16-2 run over the next 5:10 that featured three Manning three-pointers and five points from McMahon. Cortland led by at least 20 points over the final seven minutes.
Cortland will host Brockport on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m.
