Cortland Suffers 6-5 OT Loss at Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Tom Longland scored 1:59 into overtime to give Morrisville State a 6-5 victory over visiting Cortland in a SUNYAC matchup. Geoff Matzel led the Mustangs with two goals and one assist.

Junior Adam Bevilacqua (Toronto, ON/St. Norbert College) led Cortland (5-15-1, 3-8-1 SUNYAC) with two goals and one assist and junior Chris Kaleta (Hamburg/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored twice. Freshman goalie Jeff Molner (Kinnelon, NJ/NY Apple Core) made a career-high 47 saves.

Jamie Nelson recorded a goal and three assists and Chris Renaud finished with a goal and two assists for Morrisville (4-16-1, 3-9-1 SUNYAC). Christopher Azzano registered 32 saves.

Cortland tied the game at 5-5 on a Kaleta power play goal, assisted by freshman Kevin Antonik (Central Islip/Jersey Hitmen) and senior Jake Saville (Bellingham, WA/Marquette Rangers), with 10:43 left in regulation.

Morrisville earned a power play opportunity with 28 seconds left in regulation. Molner made two saves to send the game to overtime, and Cortland successfully killed off the remaining 1:32 of the power play to start the extra session. Just 27 seconds later, however, Longland netted the game winner off assists from Todd Hosmer and Jonathan Cristini.

Bevilacqua staked Cortland to a 1-0 lead 9:27 into the game with an unassisted goal. The Mustangs scored the next three goals – Matzel at 12:19, Renaud on a power play at 15:40 and Nelson, also on a power play, with only 35 seconds left in the first period.

Cortland tied the game with two goals just 38 seconds apart in the second. Sophomore A.J. Moyer (Perkasie, PA/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored 11:02 into the period, assisted by Bevilacqua, and Morrisville was called for elbowing. Kaleta then tallied on the ensuing power play, with assists credited to senior Ryan Markell (Canal Winchester, OH/Ohio St. University) and Antonik, to knot the game at 3-3.

Matzel put Morrisville back on top with 5:34 left in the second, but Bevilacqua tied the game off a Michael Lysyj (Hillsborough, NJ/South Shore Kings) less than four minutes into the third period. The hosts answered with a Ryan Marcuz goal at the 8:15 mark before Kaleta tied the game at 5-5.

Morrisville finished with a 53-37 advantage in shots on goal, including 17-8 in the third period and 3-0 in overtime. The Mustangs were successful on 3-of-10 power-play opportunities and Cortland was 2-for-8 with an extra skater.
