Red Dragon Men Record Eight ECAC Efforts at Ithaca Bomber Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland athletes posted six individual and two relay ECAC-qualifying performances at the non-team scoring Ithaca College Bomber Invitational.

Sophomore Cody Amengual (West Babylon) finished first in a field of 29 competitors in the 800-meter run with an ECAC time of 1:56.50 and senior Ryan Pericozzi (Lancaster) tied for first in the pole vault and was the top collegiate finisher with an ECAC height of 4.85 meters (15' 11”).

Three Red Dragons earned ECAC qualifying status with second-place finishes - junior Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) in the shot put (14.80 meters - 48' 6.75”), sophomore Stephan Linton (Roosevelt) in the 400-meter dash (50.37) and sophomore Brandon Loomis (Rocky Point) in the high jump (1.93 meters – 6' 4”).

Sophomore Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) recorded an ECAC-qualifying distance of 15.40 meters (50' 6.25”) to finish third in the weight throw. Two Cortland relays met ECAC standards with their second-place times. The 4x400-meter relay of senior Phill Wiltshire (Vestal), Linton, freshman Rob Schenke (Kings Park) and junior Eric Banks (Westbury) finished in 3:22.67 and the distance medley relay of junior Pat Fannon (West Islip), Banks, freshman Tim Odin (Northport) and Amengual crossed the finish line in 10:18.07.

Junior Erik LeRoy (Kings Park) won the long jump with a distance of 6.51 meters (21' 4.25”), with sophomore Anthony Diggs (Jamaica/Campus Magnet) fifth at 6.21 meters (20' 4.5”). Linton was one of five Red Dragons in the top eight in the 400-meter dash. Wiltshire placed second (50.88), Greenberg was fifth (51.84), Schenke finished seventh (52.49) and freshman Neil Yodice (Northport) placed eighth (52.64).

Sophomore Paul Cuthbert (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) and sophomore Tom Calandra (Williamsville/Williamsville North) each cleared 4.10 meters (13' 5.5”) to tie for sixth in the pole vault. In the shot put, sophomore Jared Thomson (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) finished fifth (13.53 meters – 44' 4.75”) and Prendergast was eighth (13.25 meters – 43' 5.75”).

Cortland placed five runners in the top 10 in the mile run, led by freshman Matt Savino's (Seaford) sixth-place time of 4:32.19. The seventh through 10th spots were claimed by freshman Jared Walther (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) in 4:33.95, freshman Joe Ray (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) in 4:34.92, junior Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) in 4:35.02 and sophomore Ryan Perry (Buffalo/Williamsville North) in 4:37.32.

Senior Dan McManus (Warwick/Warwick Valley) qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash with a seventh-place time of 7.37 seconds in the preliminaries, but he did not run in the championship heat. Fannon finished ninth in the 800 meters (2:01.04), while freshman Nick Avossa (Kingston) finished seventh (8.89) and freshman Oscar Mercado (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) placed eighth (8.94) in the 60-meter hurdles.

In addition to Cortland's second-place 4x400-meter relay team, the Red Dragons also took third place out of 12 entries as Greenberg, Yodice, freshman Ian McMahon (Waverly) and junior Ricky Shorette (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley) finished in 3:33.50.

Cortland did not have any competitors in the heptathlon, which concluded on Sunday.
